Irish feeling? Ierland 10-11-2005 During such a trip it’s logical that you sometimes feel a bit down. Especially when you’re soaked and numbed and wander through the streets of Dublin. And you know that tonight again you won’t be sleeping in your warm bed, but on a wafer-thin mat, and your host and his roommates have decided not to pay for the heating this month, so it seems to be freezing indoors too. The raw Irish weather, together with the lack of sleep of the last few days suddenly became too much for me. All I wanted to do yesterday was to lie on the couch in my pyamas. Too good to be true... Problems of the city Fortunately the day started much better. First of all the sun was shining. It was a lovely wintersday. Also, the roommate of our host Lucas, who had irritated me that morning by claiming the bathroom for more than half an hour, suddenly became much nicer. When I was waiting for the bus, he drove by and offered me a lift to the centre. He saved me a long bus trip. We started talking about the Northern-Irish issue and especially about the conditions of present-day Dublin. ‘It’s a nice town for the younger generation, but it’s also a sad city’, is what he said about it. The drinking problem obviously plays a big part here. Besides, there’s a lot of poverty in particularly the outskirts and the unemployment rate is higher than ever before. Apart from these problems - which are not unique for a big city - my impression of Dublin is fairly positive. Of course, it’s one of those big cities again where you won’t get the real Irish feeling in the centre. However, when you’re walking through Temple Bar, the cultural district of Dublin, and you hear the Irish music and see the happy Irish people eating fish and chips and drinking a Guinness beer, you soon become a little more happier and warmer inside. print this article | mail this article |
