Joeri in France Frankrijk 18-09-2005 "On my way back I stand still, for a while, at a taxi stand. A black man tries, money in his hand, to get a cab. While the first driver refuses him for some minutes, the other cab drivers leave the taxi stand without customers. When all the other places have also become empty, the first cab driver leaves as well, without his black costumer. He stays calm, is apparently used to this. I’m boiling inside, keep standing there, look at him helplessly when he watches me. For a moment, we give each other a meaningful look. I think we understand one another. I stay, while he tries to stop another cab. The cab driver is black and I suddenly become hopeful (such a sad feeling under these circumstances). But nothing happens; they’re talking for two minutes. Then, all of a sudden, the cab driver pulls the money from the black man’s hands. Again nothing happens for three seconds. I expect the cab driver to drive off with the money. But then, at last, he beckons the man to get in. He gets a ride! I look, taken aback, at the picture I took of the first cab. Out of focus. It was dark; after all, the exposure was too long for a photo taken by hand." print this article | mail this article |
