Marina in Slovakia Slowakije 09-10-2005 “Roma’s are the problem here”. From the first conversation in Bratislava to the last in Kosice I was confronted with such resentful remarks about these people. They live with animals, destroy everything and drink up all government funding. You are truly sucked in. Of course we couldn’t just abandon ourselves to that. We had to see it with our own eyes. So yesterday afternoon Christina, journalist and expert in the field of Roma issues, took Joeri, Misha and me to a Roma village just outside Kosice. We found ourselves in the heart of what the Slovakians regard as the biggest source of problems in their country. “Do you still have all of your equipment?” was, not so surprisingly, the first question when I told law student Lucia about our visit. It is hard to accept such remarks when the people that are feared so much let you into their community, that same afternoon, with such a broad smile. Beaming children who appear from all sorts of corners and want nothing more than to pose as much as possible for the camera. The burning smell of fires as well as hot plates which keep the shackled barracks warm. The two boys with an English dictionary in their hands who are trying to explain to me that they are studying hard.
